How this calculator works
Enter the bill amount before tip, the tip percentage you'd like to leave, and how many people are splitting the bill — this works out the tip amount, the total including tip, and what each person owes.
The tip is calculated on the pre-tip bill amount: tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100). The total is bill + tip, and splitting divides that total evenly across everyone.
Worked example: a $50 bill with a 15% tip is $7.50 tip, $57.50 total — split three ways, that's about $19.17 each. For a bigger group, a $220 restaurant bill split six ways with a 10% tip works out to $22 tip, $242 total, or $40.33 per person.
Tipping culture in Australia is different from the US: hospitality workers here are paid a legally mandated minimum wage regardless of tips, so tipping isn't expected the way it is in tip-dependent economies — a tip in Australia is a discretionary bonus for good service, not a top-up to below-minimum pay. That said, rounding up the bill or leaving 10% for great table service at a restaurant is common, especially in capital cities and at higher-end venues.
A frequent point of confusion when splitting a bill is whether the tip should be calculated before or after splitting — mathematically it doesn't matter, since bill × tip% ÷ people gives the same per-person tip whether you calculate the total tip first and divide it, or divide the bill first and apply the tip percentage to each share. This calculator does the former.

- This varies a lot by country and by service — anywhere from 10-20% is common in places where tipping is customary. There's no universal standard; use whatever fits local convention and the service you received.
- Does this split the tip evenly even if people ordered different amounts?
- Yes — this calculator splits the total bill (including tip) evenly across everyone. If people want to pay only for what they individually ordered, you'd need to work that out per item instead.
- Is tipping expected in Australia?
- Not in the way it is in the US. Australian hospitality staff earn a legal minimum wage regardless of tips, so tipping is optional and appreciated rather than expected — many Australians round up the bill or tip 10% for good service at restaurants, but leaving no tip at a cafe or casual venue is completely normal.
- How do I work out the tip without splitting the bill?
- Set "Split between" to 1 person — the calculator will still show the tip amount and total, just without dividing them, which is the same as tipping and paying the full bill yourself.
