How this calculator works

Unlike length or weight, temperature scales don't share a common zero point, so converting between them uses formulas rather than a simple multiplier.

Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Celsius to Kelvin is just an offset: K = °C + 273.15, since the Kelvin scale starts at absolute zero (−273.15°C) and uses the same size degree as Celsius.

Worked example: 20°C in Fahrenheit is (20 × 9/5) + 32 = 68°F — a comfortable room temperature either way. A hot summer day of 35°C converts to (35 × 9/5) + 32 = 95°F, and a cold Melbourne morning of 5°C is (5 × 9/5) + 32 = 41°F.

A few fixed points are worth memorising rather than calculating: water freezes at 0°C / 32°F, normal human body temperature is about 37°C / 98.6°F, water boils at 100°C / 212°F at sea level, and −40° is the one temperature where the two scales agree exactly (−40°C = −40°F) — a handy way to sanity-check the formula, since plugging −40 into °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 gives −40 back out.

Australia uses Celsius for weather, cooking and body temperature, but you'll still run into Fahrenheit in older recipe books, some imported oven dials, and content from the US — this converter is built for exactly that kind of cross-reference. The most common mistake is applying the ×9/5 step to the wrong side of the equation, or forgetting the +32 offset entirely and just scaling — always convert to Celsius first if you're unsure, since it's the more intuitive scale to reason about.

Frequently asked questions

What is 0°C in Fahrenheit?
0°C (freezing point of water) is 32°F.
Why does Kelvin have no negative numbers here?
Kelvin is an absolute scale starting at absolute zero (0 K = −273.15°C), the coldest physically possible temperature, so 0 K and below don't occur — this calculator's minimum input reflects that.
What is normal body temperature in Fahrenheit?
Normal human body temperature is often quoted as 37°C, which is 98.6°F. In practice, healthy body temperature varies a little through the day and from person to person, typically somewhere around 36.1–37.2°C (97–99°F).
Why do 350°F and 180°C both show up as "moderate oven"?
Because they're roughly the same temperature — 350°F converts to (350 − 32) × 5/9 ≈ 177°C, which recipe writers round to the nearest common setting, 180°C. If you're converting an oven temperature from a US recipe, this calculator gives you the precise figure rather than a rounded one.
How do I convert a temperature difference, not a specific reading?
A change of 1°C equals a change of 1.8°F (since the formula's multiplier is 9/5), not a full conversion — so "the temperature rose by 5°C" is a rise of 9°F, not the output of this calculator, which converts absolute readings rather than differences.
