How this calculator works
Enter a letter grade and credit hours for each course — leave unused course slots set to "— (not used)" and they're excluded automatically. This calculates a credit-weighted GPA on the standard US 4.0 scale, where each grade point is multiplied by that course's credit hours before averaging.
GPA = (sum of grade points × credit hours for each course) ÷ (total credit hours). This weighting means a 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course, which is why GPA isn't just a simple average of letter grades.
Worked example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit course gives (4.0×3 + 3.0×3) ÷ 6 = 3.5 GPA.
Frequently asked questions
- Does every school use the same 4.0 scale?
- No — grade point values (especially for +/- grades) vary between institutions, and some use a 5.0 weighted scale for honours/AP courses. Check your institution's official scale if you need an exact figure for your transcript.
- Why does a 3-credit A count more than a 1-credit A?
- Because GPA is credit-weighted, not a simple average of grades — a course worth more credit hours has a proportionally bigger effect on your overall GPA.
- How do I calculate my cumulative GPA across multiple semesters?
- Treat every course from every semester as one combined list and apply the same formula — credit-weighted average across all of them, not an average of each semester's GPA.
