How this calculator works
Enter a date of birth to calculate exact age in years, months and days — as of today, or as of any other date you choose (useful for working out age at a specific event, or eligibility as of a cutoff date).
The calculation counts full calendar years, then full calendar months within the current year, then remaining days — so someone born on 15 March turns a new "year" on 15 March each year, with the month and day counts always reflecting a genuine calendar difference rather than a rough average.
It also shows total days and weeks lived, calculated as a straight day count between the two dates.
Worked example: someone born on 10 June 1990, checked as of 4 September 2026, is 36 years, 2 months and 25 days old — 36 full years have passed since June 1990, another 2 full months have passed since their most recent birthday (10 June to 10 August), and 25 days remain from 10 August to 4 September.
This calculator is commonly used in Australia to check age-based eligibility: the cutoff age for a driving licence or a working-with-children check, school enrolment age cutoffs (which vary by state and are usually based on age as of a specific date, not the calendar year), superannuation preservation age, pension eligibility, or simply working out someone's precise age for a form. Setting the "As of date" field lets you check age at any past or future date, not just today — useful for "how old will I be when X happens" questions.
A common source of confusion is that age calculated by subtracting birth year from the current year overstates age by one until the birthday has actually occurred in the current year — this calculator avoids that by counting only full elapsed years, so the figure is always accurate regardless of how close the next birthday is.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I calculate my age as of a date other than today?
- Yes — set the "As of date" field to any date, and the calculator works out age as of that date instead of today. Leave it blank to use today automatically.
- Why does the age in years sometimes differ from a simple year subtraction?
- Because a full year hasn't necessarily passed yet. Subtracting birth year from the current year overcounts by one until the birthday has actually occurred that year — this calculator only counts a year once the full 365 (or 366) days have passed.
- How does this handle someone born on 29 February?
- Age still counts in full calendar years from the birth date. In non-leap years, this calculator treats 1 March as the point the new "year" of age is reached, so the age shown stays accurate every year, not just once every four years.
- Can I use this to check age eligibility as of a cutoff date, like a school enrolment year?
- Yes — enter the date of birth and set "As of date" to the relevant cutoff (for example, 1 July of the enrolment year), and the age shown is the exact age as of that cutoff, which is how most Australian eligibility rules are actually assessed.
